UPPSALA DESTROYED
The Temple at Uppsala was a religious center dedicated to the Norse gods Thor, Odin, and Freyr. It was located in what is now Gamla Uppsala in Sweden and was widely known as the residence of Swedish Kings.
As far back as the 3rd century AD and the 4th century AD and onwards, it was considered an important religious, economic and political centre.
It was described by the 11th-century historian Adam of Bremen as the most important pagan site and was destroyed by the Christian King, Inge the Elder.
"At this point I shall say a few words about the religious beliefs of the Swedes. That nation has a magnificent temple, which is called Uppsala, located not far from the city of Sigtuna, Sweden, which was the former royal and commercial center. In this temple, built entirely of gold, the people worship the statues of three gods." Adam of Bremen.
Sigtuna, founded on what was then the shore of Lake Mälaren over 1,000 years ago. Various sources claim King Eric the Victorious as founder while others claim King Olof Skötkonung.
People have been buried in Gamla Uppsala for over 2,000 years.
The Royal Mounds, as they are called is the name of the three large barrows located in Gamla Uppsala. Folklore is that Thor, Odin and Freyr would be buried in this mounds.
