African Day

Africa is the second largest continent (after Asia). It covers one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth.

The continent is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Off the coasts of Africa are a number of islands, including Madagascar, Seychelles, Socotra, Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion, Ascension, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha; Cape Verde, the Bijagós Islands, Bioko, São Tomé and Príncipe; and the Azores and the Madeira and Canary islands .

The continent is cut almost equally in two by the Equator.

In antiquity the Greeks are said to have called the continent Libya and the Romans to have called it Africa.

Africa contains a wealth of mineral resources, including fossil fuels, metallic ores, and gems and precious metals.

Africa is now widely recognized as the birthplace of the Hominidae, to which modern humans belong. Archaeological evidence indicates that the continent has been inhabited by humans and their forebears for some 4,000,000 years or more.

Throughout human history there have been movements of peoples within, into, and out of Africa along its northern coasts, across the Sinai Peninsula, along the Red Sea, and especially in the Horn of Africa and coastal areas as far south as Southern Africa.

Here is the first track based on rhythms from various tribes within Africa.
