Originally released in 1984, “Illusion” created a stir in the LA area with several of the prominent writers were in the words of A. James Liska, from the LA Daily News , “ASTONISH ME!”  Gary Jackson of BRE noted that “There is no illusion about this music.”  And Dean Suzuki from OP Magazine, stated “They manage to strike a balance between commercial fusion jazz and a more purist approach.”   Cadence magazine stated that “I can detect the general influence of early Weather Report.

Illusion was made up of John Morell on guitar, Tom Peterson on sax, Joel DiBartolo on bass and Alan Estes on drums.

John Morell has worked for many years in television and film soundtracks, and live performances, with noted artists from Shelly Manne to Miles Davis. Joel DiBartolo was a jazz educator, award-winning musician, who passed away on Sept. 27, 2011. He performed with Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Mangione, Buddy Rich, The Tonight Show Band, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Williams.  Drummer and percussionist Alan Estes has many credits to his name for his work on records, movies, TV and jingles. A principal percussionist for composers such as John Williams, and Randy Newman.  Some of Alan's recent works include the scores for Spiderman 2, and Catch Me If You Can. World-class tenor saxophonist Tom Peterson has worked for many of the great composers/arrangers and bands including:  John Williams, Bill Holman, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabakin Big Band, Doc Severinsen and Bob Florence.
